ROBYN REVIVAL
OVER the last few years an array of artists have reappeared on the music scene. All Saints dived in head first with ‘Rock Steady’ and as quickly as they arrived they departed. Others have followed suit, WET WET WET have reformed returning with a brand new studio album. Legendary pop princesses, The Spice Girls are gracing our television screens once again promising plentiful amounts of “girl power” and sell-out singles.
It’s been ten years, but now 90’s pop star Robyn is also giving it another go.
In an exclusive chat with SMHTP's Natasha Crook, it becomes clear that Robyn is under no illusion about the tough nature of today’s music scene, she explains: “It has taken some time to build this record outside of my own territory and its been important for me to let it take time - because if I hadn’t had done that I would have had to compromise.”
The 28-year old Swedish singer is renowned for her perfectionist approach and the formula undeniably appears to be paying off. Her second single ‘With Every Heartbeat’ shot straight to Number One and her following single ‘Handle Me’ released on 29th October seems to be hinting at the possibility of sustainability for Robyn, she explains: “It’s a grower, I’m up against serious competition here with The Sugababes and the come up to Christmas. It’s climbing slowly up the charts in Britain and its also getting a lot of airplay.”
Unlike many pop artists Robyn made the decision to buy herself out of her record contract and start up her own company - a wise move it seems if the last few months are anything to go by, she adds: “It has been a very special process and a very exciting thing to have success with a record that is so dear to me.”

The bands electric influences have conspired to create a multi textured debut which shows their love of rock and roll, electro, glam,’77-British punk, jazz and hip hop. “All these extremes make our music ribbed. We don’t fit easily into pigeon-holes – not in music and not in life. We feel our generation has been cheated. Modern life has conspired to make us dumb, numb and un-questioning. We want people to tap into their primal senses again: lust, anger, love, fear, happiness and humour. Lyrically and musically the songs on this album express all of these feelings and instincts.” says Maya the bands lead singer.
